Rise and Shine

Taken on the same day as the previous post and processed the same way as well accept for one caveat.
The original 3 were to much on the dark side so I needed to make 2 higher exposures to process with the HDR to bring out more detail in the boats, dock and the foreground water. The processing was easy and quick.
I waited for the sun to move behind the lighthouse which defused the sun and gave the lighthouse as well as the grassy area a nice glow. The rest of the shot just fell naturally into place.

Safe Harbor

Safe Harbor by Tony DeSantis Photography
Safe Harbor, a photo by Tony DeSantis Photography on Flickr.

Unfortunately life is not a safe harbor like the ship is in and HDR photography is not a process through some software (Photomatix) and it is ready to post either.
This shot is a 3 shot HDR (+2,0,-2) but once the shot has been put through your HDR software the process has really just begun. Here is my post processing technique for this shot:

Post Processing:
>All 3 shots are shot in Raw
>All 3 shots are brought into Adobe Camera Raw
>Black sider defaults to 5, that is set to 0
>I check all shots for the same White Balance and Tint (Most shots I have set the White Balance for in this case it is set to shadow
>Sharpening is also preset to 25, this is also moved to 0 and a slight noise reduction is applied
>All 3 shots are saved as 16 bit tiff files
>All 3 shots are processed through photomatix (Detail Enhancer)
>I reset default settings in Photomatix and adjust accordingly (All HDR's are different) please look at Exif info for settings)
>Once again photo is saved as 16 Bit Tiff file

Processing in Photoshop CS-5:
>In this shot the -2EV sky was brought in and Masked and painted over the HDR sky that came out less than pleasing. This also removed some haloing effect from the HDR processing which can happen quite often around poles and lines. In this photo that would be the masts and lines. Also in this case it was a dark smear around those that were less appealing than the sky. So all were replaced and blended in with the -2EV.
>Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0-Pro Contrast for color correction and any added contrast
>Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0-Tonal Contrast for any areas I may want to bring out with more detail and texture (Note: These 2 Nik plugins are not always used but I do run the photo through and see if I like the corrections made. I can either lower opacity if I like what has been done but would like a little less or I can mask and only use in certain areas that I did like with a brush and blend technique)
>Lab Color Enhancement with Curves for Lightness, A & B Channels. This will usually enhance color and lightness, once again I can lower opacity to taste.
>Adjustment Layers-Photo Filter- I use this to enhance color of sky or water. Only used in areas I want to enhance and often Masked to selectively use in this photo it was used on the sky only.
>Adjustment Layer-Curves-In this shot I enhanced the brightness of the boat and dock a little of the lighthouse. These seemed dark to me from the processing through photomatix and I wanted those areas to pop more. Once again a Mask is used and a brush tool is used to paint in the areas I wanted to enhance with the curves.
>Adjustment Layer-Curves again-This time same technique as above but I wanted to darken the birds flying through the photo.
>Once the photo is where I want it I Flatten the image
>I will duplicate the image again with (Command J for Mac users) and remove all dirt or spots from lens and sensor. HDR photo's have a tendency to bring out every spot on lens or sensor.
>I will then sharpen- I mostly use Topaz InFocus
>Noise removal-More times than not on a clear sky such as this I will remove the noise from the sky only. This is used with Noise Ninja Plugin.
>I once again will save final image before cropping.

That is pretty much my work flow for HDR processing that I get emailed on. I hope you find this helpful.

Sign of the Times

After a evening of shooting at Aliso Beach I noticed this light post on the way back to the car. It seemed different and it stood out amongst the ocean and sky background so I thought I would throw a few shots at it. After I got home I noticed the signs. 3 right there (No Dogs Allowed, Steep Beach and Tsunami warning) I started to think to myself and a song kept going in my head "Signs, signs everywhere a sign blocking up the scenery breaking my mind, do this don't do that can't you read the signs" and I thought of all the signs that I saw in the parking lot
Lifeguard on Duty
No Parking
No Littering
Park hours
Bathrooms
No Dogs
Steep Beach
Tsunami Warning
Handicap Parking
Pay Here for parking

Just made me think of so many signs, so, so many signs!

Golden Gate Sunrise

This is a redo from a shot taken a few years back. I liked the first one out but this one has a more simplified process. The sky came out way more even.
This was my first time visiting the Golden Gate. We arrived so early in the morning and after all the shots I took at this location on this morning this one was my first shot and best in my opinion.
How do you take a bad shot at this location, i think it is impossible.

The Shot:
>4 panels of 3 HDR shots +2, 0, -2. Total shots 12

Processing:
>Each 3 shot panel brought into Raw, Transfered to Tiffs and brought into Photomatix
>Photomatix-Detail Enhancer and saved as 16 bit Tiffs
>4 Panels brought into Photoshop-Copied one over the other
>Choose all 4 panels and Auto Aligned and Blended-Then Flattened
>Lab Color
>Nik Color Efex Pro-Pro Contrast
>Nik Color Efex Pro-Tonal Contrast-Water only
>Adjustment Layer-Levels-Overall contrast darkening
>Adjustment Layer-Hue/Sat-Decrease saturation of reds in bridge
>Adjustment Layer-Filter Blue-Sky only and Opacity adjusted to taste
>Cropped and stretched
>Topaz Adjust InFocus for sharpening
>Framed and sized for posting

Missed Sunset

While out taking Christmas photos at the local park with my family. We finished up and we were walking back to the car when my daughter said to me "Look Dad, you missed another great sunset". Yes, that was the general consensus around the entire family. So I stopped and made them wait while I shot off a few comps before heading off. They were patient and waited before moving to the truck. They didn't have much of a choice since I had the keys.

I did shoot this hand held, I didn't make them wait while I whipped out the tripod and composed a nice photo at f/11 and low ISO which would have been a 2 to 20 second shot, With HDR that could have been a few minutes per set. Instead I opted for the higher ISO and an F/4 Aperture. I leaned against a tree to steady myself and picked a point to keep my focal point.

The colors were awesome and well worth making the family wait.

The Shot:
3 Shot HDR -2, 0, +2 expanded to -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, F/4, ISO 400

My Winter Sunset

Back Bay, Newport Beach.
I decided to skip out on work a little early to get a shoot in. Unfortunately work did run late so I got a late start out. Back bay is the closest to the office so I headed out. I was glad when I got there I had time to walk-not run down and find a good comp. The grass/Algae really intrigued me and I knew it would make for a good foreground with the sunlight shining on it.

This is a 5 shot HDR +2 to -2.
Processed through Photomatix Detail Enhancer
Topaz Adjust to enhance Color, brightness and detail
Lab Color-Curves to enhance more color
Adjustment layer Curves-increase brightness in foreground
Topaz InFocus
Topaz Denoise for sky

Upward

Going through some old photos, I picked this one to process.
This is a shot in Downtown San Francisco of the City Hall dome. This really caught my attention because of the blue skies and wisps of clouds. The dome really stood out.

>This is an HDR, 1 shot processed with a -1, 0, +1 exposures.
>Photomatix Detail Enhancer
>Topaz InFocus for sharpening
>Topaz Denoise for the noise in the sky
>Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0 Pro Contrast for Contrast and Color Cast
>Adjustment Layers Levels for sky
>Adjustment Layer Levels for Dome
>Adjustment Layer Hue/Saturation to slightly remove over saturation
>High Pass Sharpening
>Cropped, sized and framed for processing

I also decided to go with a more Pano Cropping and offsetting the dome to give this a different look. I did try a more centering cropping but it really didn't stand out enough for me. This cropping also gave the attention the sky that I thought was needed.

Old Fashioned Love Song

Decided to go a little old school on this shot.

Same family from the previous shoot. But as I was processing the shots I decided to take one of them old school showing them what a little black and white can do. Was the lighting awesome or what? I would like to take credit with fabulous reflectors and lighting equipment but it is just the sunset. How cool is that?

Precious Moments

A friend of mine wanted me to take some pictures of her and her family for xmas.
If you check out my photosteam you can see I am not much of a portrait photographer. I reluctantly accepted happy to stretch my photography skills and really hoping they came out good.
I Flickr'd all sorts of portrait photography to give myself a feel for what I was looking for.
Well this is one of the ones I ended up with. I am very happy with the results. Really makes it easy with such photographic subjects. I think one of the most impressive things about this is...I had a lot of fun doing it as well. Forecast said rain, but it did hold off to get the shots needed.

Beauty Beyond

Before hiking down to the bottom and then back up the other side. This was the must have shot of the Grand Canyon.
Woke up to a beautiful morning but yet still semi-dark, packed up the tent and headed on out. No more than 5 minutes into the trip this was the view of the Canyon with the sun breaking over the ridges. After taking in the breath taking view, I decided to stop unpack the camera equipment and tripod and took a few comps before repacking and getting on the way again.
Now, the thing you have to understand with hiking and camera equipment and taking a photo, it is a semi-major decision. With taking off the 27lb pack, taking out camera, taking out tripod, possible filters, shutter release, setting all up shooting and then packing it all back up. This burns precious energy that you will need for the hike or you maybe so tired you just don't have the energy to do it.

When I do it again, a point and shoot will be in a very handy and available pocket.

Hiker...Um, No!

Where I posted the note is where we started our hike the day before. It was icy and late in the day but eventually we arrived at our ending point (Crystal Creek). My friends were on the other side of the ridge enjoying the view and I am here pushing the shutter with a 10 second delay.
This doesn't really give you an idea of the vastness of the Grand Canyon but it does give you an idea of how beautiful this site is and well worth the hike.

Thanks for taking a look!! Leave a comment please!

Night Glow

Where to start this description?
Planned a hike into the Grand Canyon over this past weekend, I could tell you I have gotten back safely home but that would shorten the story way to much.
We hiked half way down the south rim of the canyon the first night (stayed at Indian Gardens) and then all the way down into the canyon and half way back up the north rim the next day and stayed at Crystal Creek.
Somewhere in the hike you ask yourself, "What am I doing here, hiking 12.9 miles, down 5,000 feet up another 1400 feet with 27lbs on my back and I still have to go turn around and go back and it is mostly up hill". Can you say "A few cards short of a full deck or sharp as a bowling ball, not the sharpest tool in the shed?" Well I did a couple of times. But camping on the edge of the Grand Canyon by yourself looking over the edge at the Colorado River. What a rush!!
The shot was taken from Crystal Creek looking up at ??? I don't know what the peak is called (a little help if anyone knows).
The color one came out ok, but the black and white has more of an eerieness to it. More what you feel while you are out there on a cloudy night.

Ruby Tuesday

Different upload of Ruby Falls in Mt. Rainier. Obviously this shot was taken Vertically instead of Horizontally like the previous.
This falls is a beautiful falls to shoot and see. I am glad I made the trip up in the rain to pretty much shoot this one falls before I left for home.

Next Door Neighbor

This shot was taken flying from Orange County, Ca to Sea/Tac, WA. on the first day of the trip to the Pacific Northwest. This took about a gazillion, yes I said a gazillion layers to create a decent photo. Multiple Curves, Levels, Nik Color Efex pro 3.0, for contrast and color. Some small amounts of Noise Ninja for the sky and High pass sharpening.
You may ask yourself "IF it took that many layers why bother?" Well I am sure we have all been there when you like a photo and you don't want to give upee, 33w on it and I really had nothing better to do while I have been sitting and watching the World Series. So this could be titled "what the heck I got nothin better to do". But I thought that was to long of a title.

The Path to Grace

I shot this while driving from Portland to Cannon Beach. Just tooling down the road and I saw this church along the side of the road, decided to pull over and snap a few before getting back on my way.
The HDR really brought out the sky and Silver Efex Pro 2.0 took care of the rest in Black and white. I really like the presets and then some other slight adjustments once you find a good preset and you can really bring out some definition in the right places.

South Coast Sunset

I saw this shot the day before taking my daughter to a church event. As I drove down the freeway the blue of the sky and the sunset reflection in the buildings along with the full moon made for a great scene. So there I am driving down the freeway looking at freeway over passes wondering where there would be a good shot. How many of you know the deal...driving, looking, driving slower, looking more? This was the only overpass to get the shot and even this over pass had fencing so you had to go off to the side to get the shot.
Knowing that this shot wouldn't be here next week, next month or next year. The next day I went out at sunset and set my shot.
I did mix 2 shots, 1 for the overall scene and the other with a 70-200L lens to get the moon. Otherwise the moon comes out smaller and blown out. I did all of my photoshop work and then masked in the moon where the blown out moon was at. I did scale the moon down to size.
Thanks for stopping by and taking a look!!

Real Reflection

This should be my last Trillium Lake and Mt. Hood post.
This comes from the first night of the trip. I landed at Sea/Tac airport, got my rental vehicle and headed straight for this spot. Here is the way the story goes:

About a 1 1/2 years ago I was in the Portland, Or. area. It wasn't that great of day with rain and clouds but I was determined to head up to Trillium Lake and catch the shot I have seen so many photo's of.
So away I went and after fighting traffic and driving that 60 miles and 1-1/2 hours I got to the turn off for Trillium Lake. The GPS said 2 miles. The road closure sigh said "sorry about your luck". You see I didn't check road closures and the main hwy was open right up until the time you enter the park. The gate closure and 4ft of snow said I wasn't going to make it. The date was April 28th and they don't plow the roads and open the park until May 1st. So all that driving for nothing, I was rather disappointed.
Zoom forward to this day. I knew that the next few days it was going to rain and the weather report for this day said "Sun and great weather" so this shot was going to be my one and only attempt for this area for this trip.
So 220 miles and 4 hours later here I was ready to shoot. So worth the drive, so worth the view!! I would do it all over again tomorrow for the same shot and same experience of beauty!!

Color Coded

Color Coded by Tony DeSantis Photography
Color Coded, a photo by Tony DeSantis Photography on Flickr.
Well here is my shot of Bandon Beach. I got here late, sun had set and it was raining. So after a few long exposures and getting soaked I decided to give it up and pack up what I had and hoped for the best.
The original shot is very flat in color (Blue) so I did increase exposure and pulled up the Color Efex Pro 3.0 and whipped out the Bi-Color filter and added my own color to my taste. I feel I salvaged what I felt is a good composition showing the rocks of Bandon with some decent contrasts.
There wasn't a lot of photoshop here.

Multnomah Falls

What a great place to shoot. Very popular spot in the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon. Of course I am there with all the giddy up stuff, Camera, tripod, shutter release, ND Filter. I got it working, but yes I am also surrounded by every camera small and large, Cell phones. You name it, it is being shot around me. I find it a lot of fun and all are very nice. So this is just an enjoyable and maybe a bit humous spot. I was just one of the minions shooting a very popular place.
BUT I GOT MINE!!

You can see someone standing on the bridge which gives you a good idea of scale and size.

Thor's Well

Thor's Well by Tony DeSantis Photography
Thor's Well, a photo by Tony DeSantis Photography on Flickr.
2nd day of the trip. After sleeping up at Mt. Hood and shooting sunrise I couldn't wait to get down here and shoot this area. I thought it was called "Devils Punchbowl" but after talking with Dustin Gent he let me know that this was actually "Thor's Well".
I got to the site and was very excited, packed up my gear humped down to the ocean floor with camera, tripod and shutter release in hand. Seemed like perfect conditions with not to much in the way of tides so I could get out to a good spot. There was a slight rain but still doable. I started setting up my shot and realized I forgot my ND filter...CRAP!!. Ok, back up to the car, grab the ND filter and back to finishing the shot.
I am happy with the turn out. It took some work in Photoshop because as great of a scene that it was with the stormy weather the colors were less than spectacular. Eventually got to Bandon, Or. but it was to late. Rain and darkness killed the scene. So after sunrise I Drove 7 hours, ran past Cannon Beach, it was totally rained out, stopped here at Thor's Well, good times, got to Bandon late...Crap!
Dustin and Brian were going waterfall hopping. Should have tried to tag along, oh well...maybe another time.

Rush Hour

Rush Hour by Tony DeSantis Photography
Rush Hour, a photo by Tony DeSantis Photography on Flickr.
Life is anything but a rush hour up in Mt. Rainier. But this sweet little falls is rushing in every direction like the 5-57-22 interchange.
Last day of the trip I drove up to Rainier in the rain really just for this shot. Hoping for more but knew i would at least get this. Rainier was totally socked in so there were no reflections in lakes or snow capped mountain shots and with the rain there wasn't going to be any hiking. Call me lazy but if it wasn't right off the road I wasn't going after it. Besides my legs were a little sore from the 13 mile Ramona falls hike. But that is a totally different story.
On this day I did get a few other shots but they are still waiting on processing.

Today I am back home so I will try to catch up on comments and everyones photo's.

I'm Not Home Yet

2nd shot from Trillium, I hope I don't bore you all with shots from Trillium, I haven't even started on the night time photo's I took from the night before. Probably because these are more interesting with the cloudy sky compared to the night before with totally clear skies. Maybe I should wait on those and post another day.
The title comes from being held up in a hotel in Seattle waiting for my flight tomorrow morning. It has pretty much rained all the time I was here so it was a waterfall weekend besides these shots at Trillium.
As beautiful as this scene is and as enjoyable as it was. I miss my family and can't wait to get home!!
